Models of volunteering in modern society

In modern society, volunteering is a global movement. In developed countries, this phenomenon is deeply rooted in the minds of people. Some authors agree that the measure of the presence of volunteering in a citizen's life is a kind of indicator of social development, the result of understanding national and global problems and the search for an effective way to solve them. Volunteering took on a special role during the COVID-19 pandemic when volunteers helped with the fight against coronavirus infection in different ways. Analyzing the study of volunteering in scientific literature, the author notes that there are different definitions of this phenomenon with different semantic content. The paper discusses the psychological qualities of volunteers, the motivation of volunteer activities. The basic models of volunteering are analyzed: the personal benefit model and the public goods model. The characteristics of the modern volunteer movement are revealed.
