The article explores the qualitative properties of cylindrical radio frequency ion guides used to convey ions. Analytical expressions for electric fields obtained earlier, and the theory of pseudo-potential motion of charged particles in RF electric fields, are used here. Different operating modes of RF ion guides are considered: with a phase π for RF voltages applied between neighboring electrodes, with a phase π / 2 for RF voltages applied between neighboring electrodes, with 100% sinusoidal amplitude modulation of sinusoidal RF voltages to provide the A-wave effect. The influence of high order nonlinear spatial harmonics of the considered electric fields for isolation, transportation and focusing of charged particles (ions) is investigated as well.
