The Moscow cinema «Khudozhestvenny» (Art) is analyzed in the period of the Russian Revolution and the Civil War as a social space on three levels (according to French philosopher and sociologist Henri Lefebvre’s theory): «representation of space», «spatial practices», and «spaces of representation». In terms of «representation of space», the architectural appearance and interior decoration of the cinema «Khudozhestvenny» (Art) during this period almost did not differ much from the pre-revolutionary time. However, «spatial practices» changed towards the shift for holding public events in the cinema building, and propaganda materials, which were often placed in the lobby. As for «spaces of representation», then for the audience the cinema remained in many respects a place of leisure and entertainment, where mainly foreign and pre-revolutionary films were shown. Apparently, for the first time, the practice of displaying films for children was actively introduced. At the same time, various propaganda films, chronicles and documentaries were shown on the cinema screen, which provided viewers with new information about events in the country, but with certain ideological bias. It is difficult to say how the «spaces of representation» were built, how the viewer felt in the cinema, what he liked and what he did not. The questions are hardly responded without identifying and studying the relevant ego-documents.
