The article considers the motive of the spiritual search for the heroine of her life path. Writer of the second half of the XIX century Khvoshchinskaya in the story of 1860 "Pansionary" showed the difficulty of finding a woman spiritual freedom: the abandonment of the traditional role of diligent student, the submissive will of parents, and then an exemplary wife, subject to the will of her husband, to a free person who showed her creative abilities and became an artist. The author changes the name of the heroine: instead of the former Lelenka Elena was, changes her soul world: instead of naivety and love, sensuality and dependence on the man, there was self-confidence, independence, purposefulness. The motif of spiritual change and the acquisition of freedom by a woman was discovered by Khvoshchinskaya and was further developed in Russian literature, including the story of A.P. Chekhov "The Bride" (1903).
