The article is devoted to the social problems in the history of the national education. The author considers the legal and social status of a teacher of provincial high schools in Russian North. Many outstanding people, good experts possessing a profound knowledge of the subjects taught to the high school students did their jobs, in spite of the fact that lack of teaching materials and a teacher low social status made pedagogical career unattractive.
