N.S. Gumilev as the translator of “The rime of the ancient mariner” by S.T. Coleridge

As a translator, N. S. Gumilev sought to convey the original meaning as precisely as possible, although his translations are not without errors. With all this, he makes the ballad action more dynamic and spectacular, which corresponds to his own aesthetic views. But most important is that the translation transforms the basic idea of S. T. Coleridge’s: the original Ancient Mariner who has resigned himself to the power of Providence, turns in the Russian version of the poem into a man who has not passed the test of divine solitude.
