This article presents the author's approach to the interpretation of ethnicity. The object of study is ethnic identity, which the author considers from the position of a constructivist approach, but based on primordialist categories, including territory, language, origin of the community and its culture. As a basis for ethnic integration, the author considers the «social instinct» interpreted from the position of A. Adler's theory and based on the concept of L.G. Pochebut. As a factor of ethnogenesis influencing group mobilization and the acquisition by an ethnic group of self-perception of an ethnos, and then an ethnocultural nation, the author considers such categories as historical memory and cultural and historical heritage.
