At the end of the 19 th century in a burial-mound near the cossack village of Rayevskaya in the north-east pontic Region, a set of glazed china items was discovered, consisting of a jug and two small cups. The leader of the excavations, V.I. Sizov, determined that they were of Turkish or Persian origin and dated them to the 17 th century. Comparison with similar modern finds made it possible to identify all the items as Turkish faïence dating from the first half of the 17 th century. The jug and the cup with polychrome painted decoration is of Iznik production, while the cup with monochrome dark-blue painted decoration and a stamp on its base was established as an item originating from Kütahya.
