Ethnic and cultural associations of the Siberian Tatars living in Tyumen region (the 1980s - early 2020s)

This article presents the history of main ethnic and cultural associations ofthe Siberian Tatars living in Tyumen Region -the main region of the Siberian Tatar population. Ethnic and cultural movement ofthe Siberian Tatars in that region has been developing most actively compared to other regions of Western Siberia where the Siberian Tatars live. The study covers the period from the late 1980s to early 2020s. The lower boundary is the time when the first ethnic and cultural association of the Siberian Tatars was created; the upper boundary corresponds to the present-day activities of such associations. This study was based on interviews with activists and leaders of ethnic and cultural associations of the Siberian Tatars from Tyumen Region, documents of the regional Siberian Tatar ethnic and cultural associations, publications of the local media, statements from the official websites of the Siberian Tatar ethnic and cultural associations and their official groups in social networks as well as information from scholarly literature. Main activities of ethnic and cultural associations of the Siberian Tatars during this period are discussed. These organizations include the Committee for the Ethnic Revival of the Siberian Tatars, Association of Tatars of Tyumen Region, Ethnic and Cultural Autonomy of the Siberian Tatars and Tatars living in Tyumen Region, “Miras” (“Heritage”) Regional Tatar Public Organization, and Ethnic and Cultural Autonomy of the Siberian Tatars of Tyumen Region. Special attention was given to the initiative of the Siberian-Tatar community of Tyumen Region to give the Siberian-Tatar language an official status and create its written language. Ethnic and cultural associations of the Siberian Tatars of Tyumen Region were successful in obtaining the code of independent language for the Siberian-Tatar language.
