The land allotment and land use of the Cossacks of the Stavropol Kalmyk army

The article discuses the system of land allotment to the christened Stavropol Kalmyks in the middle of XVIIIth century. The paper also reveals the reasons of subsequent re-allotment of land and retraces the ways the Kalmyks made household use of the alloted lands. The inconsequent activity of the authorities to force Kalmyks to cultivate and work land did not give any positive results. They started leasing the major part of the troops’ lands to the neighboring peasants. The ineffective use of the lands resulted in the working out of the projects of their partial confiscation. As an outcome, Stavropol Kalmyk troops were dissolved and Kalmyks moved to the large Cossak villages (“stanitsah”) of the Orenburg Cossack troops.
