National schools of the 18th century: special status and philological training

The article analyzes educational process of the Russian national schools established at the end of 18th century. The schools initiated mass regular education. At the same time they did not become a successive link of education in the system «elementary school - university». The absence of continuity was conditioned by the weakness of philological training in the schools.
