Arctic people's conservation: participation of extractive companies in improving the quality of life of the northern first nations

The article examines the issues of improving the quality of life of Northern first nations as one of the directions of ensuring people’s conservation in the Russian Arctic. The relevance of the research topic is related to the implementation of Presidential Decree No. 474 of 21 July 2020 “On the National Development Goals of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030”, “Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and National Security up to 2035”, approved by Presidential Decree No. 645 of 26 October 2020 in terms of ensuring national development, population conservation, human health and well-being, sustainable social and economic development of the Russian Arctic zone. Improving the quality of life for local people in the Russian Arctic is seen as an important element in the calculation of the People’ conservation index. The approach to expanding the participation of extractive companies in the implementation of projects and programs for the socio-economic development of the Arctic territories is justified. Analyzes the experience of Almazy Anabara JSC in supporting measures aimed at developing traditional crafts and improving the quality of life in the Arctic regions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), including promotion of employment, procurement of traditional crafts products for the company's needs, etc. Based on sociological research in the extractive project areas, the main social issues of concern to the local population, as well as factors that affect the quality of life of Northern first nations, are highlighted.
