The authors study the positive experience of using the legacy of the Olympic Games in host destinations and the mechanisms for extending the "Olympic effect", consider the cases of Olympic capitals, which later became leading tourist destinations, and examples of countries that failed in an attempt to use megaevents as a growth driver for their tourism industry. Contrary to the popular belief that failure of the Olympic capitals caused by mistakes in planning and preparing for the games, the analysis of cases shows that success or failure is based on a complex of different factors - from external economic to internal socio-demographic ones.
