The article analyzes the priority theses concerned with the definition of the criteria of the intellectual work capacity of first year students. The author notes that in the modern methodology of the intellectual work capacity there are no clear criteria of this phenomenon. On the basis of differentiation, analysis and generalization of the scientific fund, the paper presents the following criteria of the considered phenomenon: development of cognitive processes, emotional and motivational activity in the intellectual actions, subjectivity, objectivity, and balance in the implementation of mental actions, as well as the effectiveness of intellectual work. The prospects of the consequent research are outlined.
