The paper discusses the problems of formation and development of research schools of Soviet universities in 1920-1980. Basing upon the published and archival sources, as well as special literature, the author shows the activities of chemistry faculties and departments of the USSR universities on creation of a number of research schools. The short analysis of the scientific work of eminent chemistry scientists of Moscow, Kazan, Leningrad, Saratov, Tomsk and other universities is given. It is emphasized that there was a close connection between scientific researches and educational process at the higher school. The author considers the role of outstanding Soviet scientists in establishment of chemistry schools. It is concluded that there is continuity of scientific and pedagogical activity of the teaching staff of the Soviet and modern Russian universities.
