The critical focus of the article is due to the lack of deep philosophical and psychological foundations for the concept of “skill” in pedagogical theory and practice. Based on the ideas of G. Hegel, L.S. Vygotsky, E.V. Ilyenkov, G.V. Lobastov, the author analyzes the cultural and historical contradictions of a skill as a form of social activity and argues for the destructive impact of this circumstance on the formation of thinking, which requires a deep and comprehensive understanding by pedagogy.
