Neuropathy of the facial nerve is one of the most common manifestations of peripheral nervous system disease, and the incidence of patients continues to grow. The incidence of facial nerve neuropathy in European countries is 20 cases, in Japan – 30 cases per 100 thousand population. Much is still unknown about the connection between pregnancy and Bell's palsy. Although it is classically believed that Bell's palsy is more common during this period, recent studies do not demonstrate an increased incidence of this pathology during pregnancy compared with the control group of the corresponding age and gender. However, there is strong evidence that patients who are expecting a baby and suffer from facial nerve paresis during this period have significantly lower rates of early treatment, low full recovery rates, and worse long-term outcomes.
