Some aspects of monocyte-modulating action of chorionic gonadotropin

The effects of chorionic gonadotropin on phagocytic activity of peripheral blood monocytes from women were investigated. Phagocytic activity of monocytes was investigated both in peripheral blood and under separation conditions. It was shown that in follicular phase of menstrual cycle, chorionic gonadotropin rendered depressive effect on phagocytosis, and it was found that in whole blood there were reduced both the percentage of phagocytizing monocytes and their uptaking activity, and in case of monocyte separation only the uptaking activity of cells was suppressed. In lutein phase of the cycle the prevailing stimulatory effect of chorionic gonadotropin chorionic gonadotropin was detected, and in whole blood chorionic gonadotropin raised the uptaking activity of monocytes, and in case of separation chorionic gonadotropin in a high doze (100 UE/ml) stimulated also the level of phagocytizing monocytes and their uptaking activity. Thus, the ability of chorionic gonadotropin to modulate both opsonin-dependent, and opsonin-independent mechanisms of monocyte phagocytosis has been shown.
