In this article, the author analyzes the Commentaries of Blessed Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, on the Gospel of John. Te author identifies the time and circumstances of the composition of these Commentaries and some of their peculiarities. A translation is made on the basis of the edition of the Corpus Christianorum Series Latina published by Steenbrugge Abbey in Belgium. Since the Latin Vulgate came to be widely accepted only in the 6th century, Blessed Augustine uses it side-by-side with the Vetus Latina translations. Augustine’s interpretation of certain passages is determined by variant readings in the two translations.
