"Unsanctioned loyalty": combating bourgeois nationalism and pan-mongolism in Buryat-Mongolia

Бесплатный доступ

The article analyzes the discourse of «unsanctioned loyalty» in the Buryat-Mongolian ASSR in the context of which the construction of repressed or negative «national» identity was made. It was created to define a space of forms of identity, alien and hostile to the ruling regime based on ethnocentrism and which competed with the officially acceptable forms. Negative ethnicity was conceptualised by the Communists in the ideologemes «bourgeois nationalism» and «pan-Mongolism», which became tools of political practice. This created prerequisites for combating «deviations» in ethno-national culture and objectively led to the unification of socio-cultural forms in the Soviet space.
