«No, you are Serbin, you do not know it...» – the Serbian national identity on the eve and after release (second half of XIX century)

The article concerns the peculiarities of national identity (self-awareness) of Serbs living within the borders of the Serbian principality. National identity is considered through a number of criteria, markers – religion, language, historical memory, national character. The main source is the memories of Serbia, written by Russians who visited the principality.
