The article deals with the problems of balanced development of Russian regions in the conditions of the new economic reality. The main challenge of the new reality is the technological component, the advantages of which are concentrated in the global space. An increasingly important role in ensuring regional balance is played by the potential and real ability to develop and apply new technologies. To use this potential of regional development, it is necessary to overcome the accumulated technological gap.
