The article deals with a new book of the professor of the Mainz University (Germany) A. Rödder "Germany, the United Fatherland. History of Reunification" (Munich, 2009). The book is assessed regarding the ongoing examination of the role of the Soviet diplomacy in the German unification. In the opinion of the German historian, it was the policy of the USSR leaders, which made the unification possible. He presents a range of new facts to the readers and pushes the personality of M. Gorbachev to the foreground trying to comprehend his decisions and their motives.
