New data on the Izborsk vicinity in the 10th-12th centuries

The paper introduces materials from new field research of the sites nearIzborsk at the time when the town was functional in the Truvorovo hillfort. Two graveswere excavated at the Ust-Smolka Burial Ground. One grave containing a femaleinhumated burial is noted for its relatively rich funeral offerings that include elementsof artifacts belonging to the Latgalians. A small but rather representative assemblageof ceramics from the 10th-12th centuries has been collected at an unfortified settlementnear village Brod. The paper contains a map of the sites near Izborsk and advanceshypotheses about the dynamics of the life in the town and its vicinity as a singlesettlement block
