The history of Pre-Mongol architecture investigations in Smolenskcontinued in 2014 through rescue excavations in the central and southern parts of thechurch on Shkolnaya Street 2. The ruins of this church were recorded for the first timeby N. V. Sapozhnikov in 1989. The new excavations complemented N. V. Sapozhnikov’sconclusions on the characteristics of architectural elements and the size of the church withimportant observations. These new observations put some question marks about a numberof arguments that were previously used by researchers to determine a clear chronology ofchurch building activities in Smolensk
