New excavations of the Rostislavl Ryazansky defensive structures

The excavations carried out at the Rostislavl hillfort between 2013 and2014 checked whether there was an ancient entrance passage to the hillfort site throughthe medieval rampart western edge (ruins of the timber and earthen wall of the city).The excavations demonstrated absence of any traces of entrance and helped clarifythe technical design and the size of timber blockhouses the wall was made of. The materials,from which dates were obtained, enable the researchers to refer the wall explored tothe second half of the 14th century with fair confidence; it was the time of confrontationbetween Grand Prince Oleg Ivanovich of Ryazan and Moscow (1350-1380).
