Since its inception at the end of the 19th century, the Russian energy industry has remained the flagship of the national economy and the driver of its technological development. Before the sanctions war that began for domestic energy companies in 2014, Russia was developing its energy sector within the framework of global trends, which consisted of reducing customs and tax barriers for investors and exporters, exchanging expensive imported technologies for raw materials exported at world market prices, increasing dependence on Western insurance companies as we as on consulting and rating companies. The current stage of Russian energy development, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Western sanctions war (2020-2023), should be considered as transitional. New development priorities should be ensuring access to energy sources in all regions of the country, avoiding shortages or interruptions in supplies; environment protection; creating a favorable environment for innovative activities of public and private companies; expanding the geography of supplies of Russian energy resources and products produced from them; construction of a qualitatively new energy infrastructure in the neediest regions of the country.
