Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is one of the most important micronutrients for the normal functioning of the human body. It is involved in redox reactions, collagen synthesis, iron metabolism, antioxidant defense, and the regulation of the nervous system and energy metabolism. This article provides a brief analysis of the biochemical functions of vitamin C, a detailed description of its mechanisms of action, metabolic pathways, and the clinical consequences of deficiency. It also examines current research on the potential therapeutic use of vitamin C in chronic inflammatory, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. This article provides a comprehensive understanding of the role of ascorbic acid in maintaining homeostasis.
