In this article, the author analyzes the idea of several Western scholars (including the author of the French Dictionnaire de spiritualite) that the first and third Beatitudes (concerning the poor in spirit and the meek) initially constituted one commandment and that the Evangelist Mathew added the word “spirit” to the first Beatitude of his own will. Te purpose of this study is to identify whether these hypotheses can be supported. Te main method is contextual analysis. Te author concludes that the first hypothesis is doubtful, while the second is possible but not necessarily acceptable.
