On the functions of intonation norms in modern Russian

The article systematizes the results of linguistic research which prove that in modern Russian intonation norms have many functions: 1) regulate grammatical pauses; 2) regulate realization of intonation units and their combinations; 3) fix the place of emphasis; 4) structure dynamic contours of syntagmas and phrases. Special attention is paid to some non-standard intonation realizations - violations of speech communication; stylistic, emotional and expressive modifications of intonation units.
