The article deals with the compilational nature of the literary heritage of Abbot Alcuin as a reflection of the creative theological method of his era. His work with the texts of the Fathers laid the foundations for the normative base of the patristic writings in the Catholic interpretation. An atempt was made to identify the number of people close to him who have used the compilational approach to the creation of texts, and to determine the specificity of the method of Abbot Alcuin. A close connection in terms of the spheres of research, style and content exists between his work and the works of the Venerable Bede. The author also notes the similarity of the compilational exegetical approach to the Scriptures of Abbot Wigbod to Abbot Alcuin’s work with the biblical text. Specificity of the compilational discourse of Bishop Theodulph of Orleans is noted in comparison with the approach of Abbot Alcuin. The main field of application of Abbot Alcuin’s compilations is outlined as an instrument of exegesis and theological discussion. The main significance of his heritage is determined: the identification of the patristic tradition through an accurate and appropriate compilation of the writings of the Fathers of the Church.
