The quality of criminal justice in the Russian Federation remains a pressing problem; therefore the author identifies the constitutional and legal components of the status of a judge in criminal proceedings. The article substantiates the fact that a certain set of constitutional principles for rendering justice in criminal matters is considered to be a constitutional and legal basis for the criminal procedure status of a judge. The study defines the criminal procedure status of a judge and identifies its main elements emphasizing the specific nature of the judge’s powers in the criminal process as a component of the status. The study presents the author’s definition of the constitutional and legal principles of the status of a judge in criminal proceedings. The paper provides a system of constitutional and legal principles for the criminal procedure status of a judge where the autonomy and independence of a judge in the administration of justice in criminal matters are a basic principle.
