In 1979 the Spitsbergen Expedition of the Institute of Archaeology exploredthe camp of the expedition led by V. Ya. Chichagov in the Recherche Strait. This camp wasa supply and storage base to support the 1764-1766 expedition. The archaeological excavations revealed remains of several blockhouses and crosses. Based on the materials obtainedas well as drawings and written sources, it was established that the residential structureswere subsequently used by fur hunters who were old rite believers. This fact explains a largenumber of Pomor items used in hunting and fishing that the seamen did not have.
