The issue of civilian heroism in a poem by Mikhail Yu. Lermontov “The Fugitive” is interpreted in the spirit of traditional Adyghe notions of duty to the Motherland and its people. Author, indicating high severity of the Circassian ideas about combat honor and dignity, reveals the fate of the coward Haroun. Individualism of the hero of Lermontov's poem is interpreted in moral and philosophical aspects, emphasizing the idea that a glorious death is better than a shameful salvation. It is noted that the poet was able to navigate to the main mental dominant of the Circassian society, the so-called “culture of a shame”, the essence of which is manifested in the form of public opinion, which in fact has the force of law for the Circassians.
