From a rich diversity Lupinus species (above some hundred) only four are widely produced in the world and in Russian Federation. However, a number of wild species both from Mediterranean and American centers of origin have potential for domestication. Prominent success in domestication of rough-seeded lupins has been achieved in Australia. L. cosentinii has been quite recently fully domesticated and L. athlanticus and L. pilosus are close to domestication. The list of species potential for cultivation is given with brief description of botanical and ecological characters. The species mentioned above and some others (L. princei, L. digitatus, L. hispanicus, L. albicaulis) could be valuable as potential fodder crops. Some species are major crops for soil conservation and reclamation such as L. nootkatensis widely cultivated in Iceland and some other northern countries. L.arboreus is widely used for dune sand stabilization. All species could be used as green manure, for improvement of soil structure and tilth. A number of species are valuable as nice ornamental crops.
