In the article the possessive meaning of the definite article in the Macedonian language is under consideration. The possessive meaning is based on the subject's will to appropriate the world, to include in his\her personal space animate and inanimate objects. The communication structure of the article system in the Macedonian language allows to contrast the space of the first (proximity), second (mediality) and third (distality) persons. For the speaker it is important to contrast his\her personal space to someone else's space. Neutral contrast is signified by the markers of proximity and mediality; value-oriented possessiveness is based on the contrast of proximality and distality. The person's own space is conceived as close, inner, habitual and good, while the alien space is conceived as distant, external, new and negative.
