On Rare Paleopathological Manifestations Among the Population of Eastern Aral Region in the Migration Period

In the 1st millennium, the Eastern Aral Sea region experienced several migration waves. This was the time of the spread of the conservative Jetyasar archaeological culture, known due to large-scale excavations of the Khorezm expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which examined over 700 burials in 21 necropolises. The article is devoted to the description of rare congenital pathologies of young women buried in mounds No. 109 of the Altyn-Asar 4v burial ground and No. 414 of the Altyn-Asar 4l burial site. In the first case, a picture of congenital hip dysplasia is observed together with features of chondrodermal dysplasia or Ellisvan Creveld disease. Other anomalies are also present (intercondylar foramen on the humerus, anomalies in the development of the manubrium of the sternum and sacrum). Another case demonstrates the fusion of the left pelvic bone and sacrum. Earlier, three cases of an extremely rare congenital pathology, radioulnar stenosis, were described among materials from burial grounds «l» and «r». This suggests that, despite the prerequisites for mixing, the practice of endogamy was preserved in the Jetyasar society for a certain part of the population, apparently belonging to influential clans.
