On the role of colour in names of works by Duke Ellington

The article deals with semantics of colour in names of works by Duke Ellington. It allows to follow the composer’s experiments with orchestra timbres, his look at the orchestra as a timbre palette able to create peculiar combinations. In several works the reader can see the connection of its names with the skin colour of black population of the USA and trace the development of the author's social and religious views.
