The Russian philosophical criticism of the late 19th — early 20th centuries, created by outstanding thinkers, made a distinctive contribution to Lermontian studies, examining the peculiarities of the personality of M. Yu. Lermontov and his works in the religious-moral aspect. This was a fundamentally new point of view on Lermontov, which laid the foundation for studying the poet’s religious worldview, different from journal literary criticism, which focuses on “influences”, and the populist, which defined Lermontov as “the hero of timelessness”. The article provides an analytical review of the works of Russian thinkers about M. Yu. Lermontov such as: V. O. Klyuchevsky, V. V. Rozanov, Yu. N. Govorukhi-Otroka, P. P. Pertsov, S. N. Durylin, archimandrite Konstantin (Zaitsev), in which exegetical analysis of Lermontov’s texts prevailed, revealing hidden meanings, hints, allusions in the context of the Russian beginning of his work. Particular attention is paid to the article of V. O. Klyuchevsky about Lermontov as the beginning of the disclosure of the national essence of the poet’s heritage.
