A novel by Hermann Hesse and the Opera of V. A. Mozart “The Magic flute” share common themes, motifs and characters; among other things, “The glass bead Game” is preceded by the unambiguous dedication: “Journey to the East”, frankly referring to the previous novel by Hesse, and in the history of the glass bead Game a crucial role the author assigns it to the Order of pilgrims to the East. In terms of literary and musical synthesis, it was, perhaps, some step back in comparison with “Narcissus and Goldmund” - for “musicalization of the text” here is mostly reduced to the fable parallels with the libretto of the “Magic flute”, thus, the majority of easily found analogies remains in the field of pure literature. The original hypothesis about the plot outline of the “Magic flute” by W.A. Mozart as an important source for the “Journey to the East” by Hesse seems particularly justified after we have discovered a kind of “missing links” between these two works - the novel by P. Adler “The Magic flute” (1916) and “ fantasy” with the same name by G. L. Dickinson (1920).
