Relationship between mechanical and thermal properties of vitreous solids

Constancy of the square product of the thermal expansion coefficient α 2 and elastic modulus in uniaxial strain E for inorganic glasses is determined. A linear correlation between E and 1/α 2 is observed for the most of the studied glasses. The nature of the relationship between harmonic and anharmonic properties of solids is discussed.
