About interlude of Fyodor Sologub’s novel "The petty devil": theater or cinema?

The article considers one of the outstanding texts of the Silver Age in the aspect of interlude; based on the analysis of scenic and screen versions of the novel we investigate poetics of the work in correlation with the language of theatre and cinema. It is suggested that, despite the carnivalization of life in F. Sologub’s "The Petty Devil", "theatrical" language as a whole is not close to the novelist’s manner, which can be described as an onyric one, whereas the conventionality of cinema with its conscious reconstruction of the dream land is more in line with the writer's idea of reality. We have concluded that interlude analysis allows clarifying many features of the style of any literary source: literature recognizes itself in the mirror of theater or cinema.
