The paper proves that the structures of V. Nabokov’s novels Otchayanie and Lolita turn out to be based upon the opposite vertical norms – those of “the doubling” and “the half” respectively. Recognizing this kind of relations between the two novels’ structures as a key to the analysis of different aspects of their poetics, the paper discusses the future awaiting Hermann and Humbert after text and proves it artistically logical and inevitable that “there is a green lane in Paradise where Humbert is permitted to wander at dusk once a year; but Hell shall never parole Hermann”.

Vertical norm, story, artistic mode, the double (doppelganger), "otchayanie" ("despair"), "lolita"
