Complex narrative and ornamental reliefs with hieroglyphic writing areintrinsic to the Maya stone cutting tradition. This research is dedicated to a group ofMaya monuments from Piedras Negras (Guatemala) dating to the second half of the 1stmillenium AD focused on the idea of heritage and transfer of authority in the iconographyof the ruler's throne. Investigation of the representation of the throne in monumental art aswell as and the image and accompaning hieroglyphic text on the surviving throne 1 makesit possible to draw conclusions concerning the importance of citation in iconography andreferences to the rulers of previous epochs during the reign of K'inich Yat Ahk III inthe decoration of valued objects. A comparative study of these images opens up wideperspectives for study of the ruler iconography, formation and evolution of the Mayacourtly art
