The article was written in the scientific specialty 08.00.01 Economic theory and is devoted to the issues of ensuring food security as an element of the country’s economic security based on the use of modern technologies. The history of the development of the microbiological industry in the USSR is considered from the point of view of the creation of protein concentrates for balanced fodder for agriculture. The development of the production of protein and vitamin concentrates in our country was stopped in the early 1990s, as a result of which the country’s agricultural market became dependent on world producers of proteins, primarily soybeans. Since one of the main producers of soy protein is the United States, and the use of fishmeal is costly and has long-term negative environmental consequences, under the conditions of Russian sanctions, it is worth turning to the experience of the Soviet Union and considering the possibility of recreating a protein industry from non-plant materials such as oil and gas . The first experiments after the period of rejection of these technologies turned out to be quite successful, however, the needs of the market require the intensive development of this branch of the national economy at the national level.
