Study of the personality in historiography is an important trend in development of modern science. Personification of the individuality in history allows highlighting various historical events and processes more completely and detailed. We have made an attempt to trace the tendencies of constructing the image of the Mongolian Khan Batu, who left a significant mark in Russian history. The article considers a certain layer of written material of the pre-revolutionary period, which has a predominantly homogeneous focus of estimates and characteristics. Batu Khan entered Russian history as a bloodthirsty conqueror and tyrant who devastated the Russian lands. And at the same time, the establishment of peace on the territory of the whole Juchi ulus was connected with his name. According to the scientists from different countries, one cannot talk about the activities of Batu Khan from one-sided position. The Mongolian Khan brought order and law to his people, under his rule trade routes were guarded, and diplomatic relations with Russian princes were established. Not coincidentally in Mongolian historical science Khan Batu was nicknamed.Sain Khan.. Thus, evaluation of one historical personality by different peoples, whose historical destiny had been united for three centuries, is of great scientific interest.
