The image of Jerusalem in the context of Kazan campaign of Ivan IV

The article explains the symbolic connotations of the Cathedral of the Protection on the Moat, which was built in commemoration of the capture of Kazan by Ivan IV. The author studies cultural and symbolic layers of ideas peculiar to the epoch of Ivan the Terrible. The written data interpreted the campaign of the czar as the holy war, and construction of the Cathedral is associated with images of Jerusalem’s liberation and building of the New Jerusalem.
