Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani is an outstanding Iranian political and religious figure. From his youth, he began to fight the Shah's regime, and together with his comrades from among the clergy, he came to power in Iran in 1979, creating an Islamic regime. Rafsanjani held many leading positions in the Islamic regime, including Speaker of Parliament (1980-1989) and President (1989-1997). He was known as a representative of the pragmatist camp and advocated compromise and resolution of differences in the Iranian political system. Since his death, many Iranian politicians and clerics have spoken of Rafsanjani's outstanding qualities and talents and his role in preserving and strengthening Islamic rule.
