The author analyzes the image of Russian merchant class of XVIII-th c. The author compares artistic ideas with real facts and comes to the conclusion that the growing up of merchant’s self-consciousness declared from the Russian theatre scene didn’t have any response in the real life. As the result, the ideals of the commons bursted in reality.
