Problem and purpose. The role and functions of the pilot's image in the Soviet satirical literature are analyzed in the article. The problem of constructing a mental map by means of an aviation text is also being updated. The purpose of the article is to identify ideologically significant features of the aviator's image, to define its functions in the framework of designing a new mental map of the young Soviet state. The methodology of the research is comparative-historical, culturological, sociological and philosophical approaches. Results. On the basis of the interdisciplinary analysis of aviation motifs, I. Ilf and E. Petrov's novel The Golden Calf (1931) revealed the main features of the pilot's image, the mechanisms for constructing the hero's image, and the most important function of aviation images - the structuring of space, both on the state and primitively household levels. In the article this opposition is designated as the antithesis of the “unknown country” where only “the new salt of the earth” deserves to live, and the communal apartment - “Crow's Slobodka”, which becomes a haven for “the former hosts of life” whose petty-bourgeois ideology does not correspond to” the party line”. The conclusion. The author of the article suggests that the concept of the aviator's image suggested in this satirical novel fits into the general tendency of the socialist realism approach to constructing the image of the new superman within the framework of the period under study. It is worth noting that aviation motives are quite significant in the process of creating new ideas of space, as well as the representation of social stratification in literature and culture.
